Rescue teams arrive at quake site
Updated 27 December 2003, 11.11
Bam is littered with rubble
International rescue teams have arrived in the Iranian city of Bam to help the survivors of a massive earthquake which killed up to 25,000 people on Friday.

The UK, Turkey, Germany, Switzerland, France and Russia are among the countries which have offered to help people in the stricken city.

Officials say between 10,000 and 25,000 people died in the quake, measuring at least 6.3 on the Richter scale.

Thousands more were injured. Up to 70% of the city's buildings were destroyed.

They included two hospitals, which has made it really difficult to treat the survivors.

Water, electricity and gas supplies have been cut and the roads surrounding the city have become jammed with cars as people travel to the town looking for relatives.

Bam is an ancient city. It became an important regional centre in the 16th Century. Many of its historical buildings were not designed to cope with earthquakes.
