Saddam had been living in squalor
Updated 16 December 2003, 08.36
Saddam's hideout
Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was living in squalor when he was captured, pictures just released have revealed.

The man who formerly lived in opulent palaces across Iraq was holed up in a shack fit for a tramp.

He was discovered in an underground hiding place by US troops. It seemed he lived in a nearby shack when he was not under threat of being captured.

The pictures show a filthy kitchen, a makeshift dressing table and a bed draped in dirty clothes.

Saddam was probably used to dining in style, but troops found his fridge stocked with chocolate bars and lemonade.

And in the garden, they discovered a string of sausages which had been hung out to dry.

Saddam's hiding place was in the town of Ad Dawr, just 10 miles from his hometown of Tikrit in northern Iraq.

Secret location

Saddam has now been taken to a secret location for questioning.

US President George W Bush has promised that Saddam will get a fair trial.

opening quoteI'm very glad that they've caught him. No one should suffer like the Iraqis did. I don't think he should get the death penalty. He should suffer.closing quote
