US will end Iraqi control in 2004
Updated 15 November 2003, 16.11
Power is being handed to an Iraqi government next year
The US-led coalition will give up control of Iraq by June 2004, handing power to a transitional government, the Iraqi Governing Council has said.

That government will be selected by US officials and Iraqi political parties.

The Iraqi people will finally get a chance to choose their government in a general election in 2005.

The transfer of power is earlier than expected, and may be linked to the number of soldiers killed in Iraq since major combat ended on 1 May.

At least 160 US soldiers have been killed since that date, and there are constant attacks on the coalition forces in Iraq.

When the new government takes over the US soldiers won't leave overnight, but they'll be in the country because the transitional government want them there.

The timetable for the changes has been supported by Iraqis, and may convince some people there to stop attacking troops.
