Iraqi girls' school back on track
Updated 20 October 2003, 19.17
Pupils at Tigris Secondary School For Girls
Kids in Baghdad say they've got mixed feelings about being back at school following the war to get rid of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

One 14-year-old at Tigris Secondary School For Girls told the BBC that "some things are much better".

She said the girls now have more freedom to say what they think.

But they're scared to go out after school because, even though the war is over, the troops remain on the streets and the bombings have continued.

Sister Clara's got her job back

The school is one of the best in Iraq, but standards dropped under Saddam's rule.

The headteacher was sacked because she failed to join the ruling political party.

The teachers were paid a terrible wage and accepted bribes from rich parents who wanted their kids to pass exams.

But the old headteacher - Sister Clara - has now got her job back and the tutors are getting a decent pay packet.

But other schools are struggling to recover.

One of them was so badly damaged by vandals and looters that it has to borrow classrooms from a primary school.
