  Kids face curfew in Australia
Updated 23 October 2003, 11.37
Some children in Perth, Australia, have to live by curfews
Children in some parts of Australia are living under a curfew so they have to keep off the streets at night.

Police there are worried too many children are hanging around drinking, using drugs or sniffing glue.

So all 13-year-olds in Perth have to be home by dark. And anyone under 16 must be off the streets by 10pm.

Some people say the law is unfair and racist because many of the kids living in the area are Aborigines.

But the government says the curfew was introduced to keep the children safe, and their race is nothing to do with it.

Help

Children hanging out in the area say there are just a small number of kids looking for trouble.

Meanwhile child welfare experts say a curfew won't work.

They say the government should be finding out why the kids are hanging around after dark, and offer them help instead.
