Updated 12 October 2003, 18.54
An American rushes to the scene
At least six Iraqis were killed after a bomb went off outside a hotel used by coalition officialsand members of the Iraqi Governing Council in Baghdad.

Witnesses say a car exploded after it was fired at, and some claim there was also a second explosion.

Parts of the Baghdad Hotel are said to have collapsed as US troops rushed to the scene, joined by ambulances and helicopters hovering above.

The US State Department called the attack a "vicious act of terrorism".

A member of the Iraqi Governing Council staying in the hotel said seven people had died, and an Iraqi doctor confirmed 32 wounded people were being treated.

A massive bomb went off at the UN headquarters in Baghdad in August, killing 22 people, including the head of the mission, Sergio Vieira de Mello.

The US administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer, said: "We will work with the Iraqi police to find those responsible and bring them to justice."
