Base jumpers set record in China
Updated 06 October 2003, 15.45
The skydivers leapt from a great height
A group of 15 daredevils have set a record after they parachuted off China's tallest building in Shanghai.

It's called base jumping, and this was the highest ever in China.

It wasn't high enough to beat the world record, when 16 skydivers jumped from the world's tallest building - the Petronas Towers in Malaysia.

The jumpers in China had eight seconds before they had to open their parachutes, and a further 30 second flight.

Base jumping is banned in lots of countries because it is so dangerous, but on this occasion the Chinese Government let them do it.

The jump was part of the country's week-long National Day celebrations, and was such a success that it may now happen every year.

The National Day is 1 October and marks the founding of the People's Republic of China.
