Iraqi kids return to Saddam-free schools
Updated 01 October 2003, 07.51
Loads of schools have been repared in Iraq
Millions of children in Iraq are returning to school on Wednesday - and things look very different from the last time they were there.

Classrooms, textbooks and even the way they are taught are all different now, because old leader Saddam Hussein isn't in charge any more.

Pictures of the country's ex-president used to be all over the schools and in all the books, and pupils had to learn what a great leader he was.

There is lots of work left to do to fix Iraq's schools

Now he's being removed from all the schools, with the United Nations printing around 70 million new books without him or his ideas in them.

The buildings themselves also look better, because a huge programme to fix damaged schools and build new ones is going really well.

Lots of new teachers

Before the war in Iraq lots of teachers were members of Saddam Hussein's political party and only taught what he wanted.

All those sorts of teachers have now been sacked and the new ones are being taught how to lead lessons more like ones kids in the UK have.
