Prince Harry arrives for gap year in Australia
Updated 23 September 2003, 17.32

Prince Harry was welcomed to Australia by some furry natives as he arrived in the country for the first three months of his gap year.

The Prince was greeted at Sydney zoo by Lowana and Yindi the koalas, a baby wallaby called Wilbury, and Spike, a prickly looking echidna.

He looked a bit nervous about holding Spike, and pulled funny faces for all the photographers - and loads of girl fans - who'd turned up to see him.

But not all Australians were so pleased to see the Prince.

Some politicians are angry because his trip is costing Australians thousands of extra pounds in extra security.

They think the extra money should be paid by the British government or the Royal Family.

It's thought rugby fan Prince Harry will take time to watch some of England's World Cup matches during his time in Oz.

And he's also planning on spending some time working on a cattle or sheep farm as a 'jackaroo' (or cowboy) in the outback, where he will be paid the same as other gap year students doing a similar job.
