  8,000 flee Canadian forest fires
Updated 03 August 2003, 16.47
Residents of Montreal and firefighters watch a plane drop its water load
More than 8,000 people have fled their homes in British Columbia, Canada as forest fires rage across the region.

At least 70 homes have been destroyed so far as firefighters struggle to bring under control three seperate blazes.

Luckily, there are no reports of any deaths.

Cigarettte to blame

Planes are being used to drop water on the fires but dry weather and strong winds are fuelling the flames.

At least one of the fires is thought to have been started by a cigarette end.

Further south, in the American state of Washington, other large fires are also burning out of control in the Rocky Mountains.

A BBC reporter says the only thing which will stop the fire spreading is heavy rain.

But none is expected for five or six days.
