More British troops heading for Iraq
Updated 11 September 2003, 18.12
Soldiers leave their barracks in Blackpool
Around 600 more British troops are being sent to Iraq on Thursday, swapping their base in Blackpool for one in Basra.

And they're not the only British troops heading for the Middle East soon.

Another 600 soldiers are going there from Cyprus in the next few days, and a further 1,000 may be on their way in the next few weeks.

So far 10,000 British troops are in Iraq, but because it's got more dangerous there in recent weeks, more are needed to calm things down.

The soldiers from Blackpool - the 1st Battalion The Royal Green Jackets - were supposed to leave on Wednesday but were delayed by a day.

Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said military leaders in Iraq had told him they needed more troops.
