US asks for more troops in Iraq
Updated 05 September 2003, 10.56
Kids in Iraq
The US says it needs 10,000 more troops to get Iraq back on its feet.

The Americans want soldiers to be sent from other countries to help keep the peace in the country, but they are struggling to get support for their plan.

The US wants the UN to pass a new rule - called a resolution - that will give United Nations support to the way the US is doing things in Iraq.

But the US still wants to control how to make things better in Iraq, and that's not good enough for a number of countries in the UN.

They want the United Nations to play a much bigger role in rebuilding Iraq.

However with things getting worse in Iraq, some sort of agreement is needed, so both sides may have to give in a little.
