Anti-spitting patrol join fight against Sars
Updated 11 May 2003, 13.38
Anti-spitting officers on patrol
Officials in a Chinese city have come up with a new way to stop the spread of deadly flu virus Sars.

They have set up a force of "hygiene police" to stop people spitting in the street.

A total 1,000 officers are patrolling the southern city of Guangzhou to put a stop to the dirty habit.

Sars can be passed on by germs in spit - that's why so many people have been wearing face masks.

Anyone caught spitting will be fined 50 Yuan (£4) - which is a lot of money to most people in the city.

Loads of people have been wearing face masks

Guangzhou is in the province of Guangdong, which has been badly hit by Sars, with more than 1,500 cases.

Around 240 people have now died from Sars in China.

But there have only been a handful of cases in the UK, so the chances of getting it are very slim.

Officials in Guangzhou say the anti-spitting patrol is also aimed at encouraging good manners.

In the past, China has launched lots of campaigns to stop people spitting.

Many people say they do it to clear their throats because the air is polluted.
