Iraqi children hit by cholera disease
Updated 08 May 2003, 16.58
Many Iraqi children are drinking dirty water
Children in Iraq are at risk after an outbreak of the diseases cholera and typhoid.

Both of these are caught by them drinking dirty water and eating dirty food.

Cholera causes diarrhoea and makes you sick, and typhoid symptoms include high fever and bad aches and pains.

Medical supplies

Cholera is particularly dangerous for children as they dehydrate very quickly.

Cholera can be very dangerous to children
Both of the diseases have been wiped out in countries like the UK, but they are still spread in poorer countries where medical supplies aren't as good.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said there were 17 official cases of cholera in Iraq, but they believe the true figure is at least 10 times that.

Help needed

Both cholera and typhoid can be cured really easily, but most of the Iraqi hospitals don't have the right medicines to treat it.

Some help is on its way - a plane carrying medical supplies and food arrived in Iraq on Thursday, but it's not enough and more medicines are desperately needed.
