Vietnam is first to control killer Sars
Updated 28 April 2003, 07.12
Some students in Hong Kong have gone back to school
There's been some good news at last in the fight against the lethal Sars bug.

Vietnam has become the first country to control the virus.

There've not been any new cases reported there since 8 April.

It can be stopped

And under rules from the World Health Organisation (WHO), if there's not been any new cases for 20 days it means a disease has been controlled.

Fact File
Sars deaths so far
Mainland China: 131
Hong Kong: 133
Singapore: 21
Canada: 21
Vietnam: 5
Thailand: 2
Malaysia: 2
Philippines: 2
Taiwan: 1

It's good news for millions of people living in Sars-infected countries, as it shows the virus can be stopped.

Vietnam was seen as one of the worst-hit countries at the start of the outbreak. Five out of 65 infected people died from it.

But the news wasn't so good in other countries.

There were 12 new deaths in Hong Kong on Sunday, and nine in China.

In Beijing, schools, cinemas, theatres and internet cafes have been shut to stop the bug spreading.
