Baghdad ammo dump explosions cause anger
Updated 26 April 2003, 19.58
Weapons store
Hospital workers in Baghdad say at least 12 people have been killed by the explosions at an ammunition and weapons dump near Baghdad in Iraq.

The reports about the exact number dead are confusing though because the area has been closed off.

Some reports are saying as many as 40 are dead.

A US official said flares were deliberately shot into the store of weapons which started lots of blasts and fires.

In the store were missiles, mortars, grenades and hundreds of thousands of bullets.

The US guard captured stores of Iraqi weapons and ammo around several sites in Baghdad. This one was in a neighbourhood in southern Baghdad.

But many Iraqis angry weapons were being kept so close to houses and hundreds started street protests against the US.

Rubble

Many people who live near the area have been very badly hurt, most suffering from bad burns. At least four houses were destroyed.

There are still lots of injured people buried in rubble.

US officials are now investigating what exactly happened.
