Ali recovering in hospital after operation
Updated 17 April 2003, 07.53
Ali is getting better in hospital
Ali Ismail Abbas, the Iraqi boy who lost both his arms in a bomb attack, is recovering in hospital after important surgery.

The 12-year-old boy was flown from Baghdad to a hospital in Kuwait for the life-saving operation.

A Ministry of Health spokesman in Kuwait, Dr Ahmad Al Shatti, said: "Don't worry. He's in safe hands now. He's been smiling. I think he's in good shape."

Ali was also badly burned during an coalition bombing raid on Baghdad, and that is what the doctors are working on first.

Famous

They've cut off lots of dead or diseased skin from the burned bits, and in a later operation will try to cover those areas with healthy skin.

In around three weeks doctors will start measuring Ali so they can make him some artificial arms.

Ali became famous during the war on Iraq when his story was reported by lots of newspapers and TV programmes.

But charity workers in Iraq say there are dozens of children just like Ali who have not had so much attention. Doctors and nurses are working around the clock to try and help them.
