Kids face gun crime in Jamaica
Updated 16 April 2003, 10.58
Asher D talks to a child in Bennett land, Jamaica
Asher D from So Solid Crew - who has been in jail for owning a gun - has learned his lesson, that guns aren't cool.

The rapper spent seven months in Rugby Young Offenders institute after being caught by police with a loaded gun in 2002.

He travelled to Jamaica with Newsround's Laura Jones to find out about the gun terror faced by kids in some parts of the capital Kingston.

He said: "We need to just finish all the gun business, all the violence, all the provocations, all the madness just leave it and let it alone man. Put down the guns."

Asher joined forces with the charity Christian Aid to raise awareness of the gun problems in the area of Bennett Land.

Bennett Land is a very poor part of Kingston where a war is going on between two gangs.

Each gang controls one end of a road in Kingston, and if anyone crosses an invisible line in the road the risk being shot at.

But some people are trying to make it better.

A charity has got together with some members of the community to allow kids to get together without the fear of violence.

It's base is built in the middle of the road and lets kids play cricket, netball, basketball and football together.

Asher D will be joined by other So Solid members, Heartless Crew and More Fire Crew at a series of Disarm concerts set to take place later in April in the UK.

Those gigs come after gun crime in the UK hit the headlines.

Things have got so bad that police have declared a gun amnesty, allowing people to hand in their guns without getting into trouble.
