Blair meets school kids in Iraq
Updated 29 May 2003, 13.34
Tony Blair with school pupils in Basra
School children in Iraq got a visit from Tony Blair as part of his tour of their country.

The British Prime Minister is the first Western leader to visit Iraq since the war ended.

Girls and boys, dressed smartly in their best uniforms, chanted the Iraqi alphabet for Mr Blair, and performed party pieces.

'Proud'

Blair gets a kiss from one schoolboy
One young girl attempted to sing the nursery rhyme Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in English, and made all her classmates giggle when she got bits wrong.

The Prime Minister even picked one boy up in the playground, and the pupil gave him a kiss on the cheek.

Mr Blair said to the pupils at the school in Basra: "You children here are the future for this country."

The Prime Minister then went on to meet British soldiers who'd fought in the war.

He told them they'd taken part in a "mighty act" by toppling Saddam Hussein, and that everyone in Britain was proud of them, whether they agreed with the war or not.

Mr Blair is also making it clear to the Iraqi people that it's a priority to make sure they have clean water, food and shelter.

He also promised their country would be properly re-built after the conflict.
