Search for Algeria earthquake survivors ends
Updated 25 May 2003, 11.34
Swedish rescue workers and their dogs
The search for survivors of the violent earthquake in Algeria has been called off.

International teams of rescuers with sniffer dogs have been working very hard to try to find people still trapped under the rubble since Wednesday.

They hoped to save an 11-year-old girl who could be heard from underneath a collapsed six-storey building on Saturday.

But the sad rescue workers admitted they have heard no more sounds from her and sniffer dogs can't find her.

There were reports another 10-year-old girl was found alive in Boumerdes, one of the worst hit areas, just as rescuers were about to give up.

The earthquake was the strongest to hit the country in 20 years and it's thought more than 2,000 people were killed in the shaking.

But that could rise to 3,000 say officials. Over 8,600 were hurt.

Algerians are very angry with their government though. They claim time was wasted getting the rescue teams to the quake sites.

They also say their homes weren't built well enough to stay standing in an earthquake.

And they reckon officials aren't providing them with temporary shelters they need.

International aid agencies are now trying to get urgently-needed supplies like shelter, food and water to the thousands whose homes have been destroyed.
