Rescuers search for Algeria quake survivors
Updated 23 May 2003, 07.38
Rubble from the Algeria earthquake
Rescuers, locals and search dogs, including British teams, are still desperately trying to find survivors trapped under rubble after the strong earthquake in Algeria.

Over 1,000 people have been killed and nearly 7,000 have been hurt in the quake, which measured 6.7 on the Richter scale.

Thousands of people have been left without homes, food or water.

Hospitals are finding it hard to cope with all the injured and many people are being treated out in the open air.

The earthquake hit the African country on Wednesday and could be felt as far away as Ibiza.

Fact File
Algeria's quakes
22 December 1999: 28 dead and 175 injured in north-west
18 August 1994: 172 dead and 288 injured in western region of Mascara
29 October 1989: 30 dead and 400 injured in Tipaza region
10 October 1980: About 3,000 dead and 8,000 injured and in al-Asnam
9 and 16 September 1954: 1,400 dead and 14,000 injured

Many locals are angry that so many buildings just collapsed in the shaking. They say they weren't built well enough to cope with quakes.

Countries which are hit regularly by earthquakes have to make sure buildings are built to certain safety levels.

The earthquake is the worst one to hit Algeria in more than 20 years.
