US forces heading for centre of Baghdad
Updated 05 April 2003, 10.33
US forces are on their way to Baghdad
US tanks and armoured vehicles have driven into the outskirts of Iraq's capital city Baghdad.

A US military spokesman has said that some of their forces are in the centre of the city, but a BBC journalist in Baghdad said he couldn't see any there.

Some of this confusion is because no-one is exactly sure where the centre of Baghdad is.

At first it was thought the vehicles were in Baghdad to have a look around, but a different US military spokesman said: "They're not coming out."

There are reports of some fighting inside Baghdad, and a number of US soldiers are thought to have been injured.

Another important development saw the US Army capture the headquarters of one of Iraq's top military forces, the Republican Guard Medina Division.

Earlier, Iraqi officials said their people were preparing "unconventional" attacks to win back the airport, which coalition forces took on Friday.

On Friday, Iraqi television broadcast film which it said showed President Saddam Hussein meeting cheering residents on the streets of Baghdad.
