Three US soldiers killed in car explosion
Updated 04 April 2003, 14.29
Soldiers guard a checkpoint in Iraq
Three US soldiers have been killed after a car exploded near a checkpoint they were guarding north-west of Baghdad.

The US military have said they think the explosion, which also killed the driver and a pregnant woman in the car, was a suicide attack.

The attack came as US troops were taking control of the international airport in Baghdad, called Saddam International.

Even though they say they are now in control of the airport, Iraqi troops are fighting back.

A US military spokesman said the airport has now been renamed Baghdad International.

UK soldiers have set up a base in Basra, Iraq's second city, the first time they have been able to do this during the two weeks of fighting.

Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram said their first job once they secure the city is to get the drinking water running again.

Other US troops are said to be less than seven kilometres (four miles) away from the centre of Baghdad.

The Iraqi government still insist that they will win the war, in a statement from Saddam Hussein read out by one of his government ministers.

The statement said victory "is within our grasp" and the US-led coalition will be "humiliated".

  • US soldiers claim to have found boxes and boxes full of white powder and liquid in a 'suspicious site', near Latifiya south of Baghdad
  • Baghdad is without electricity and water, something the coalition says they are not responsible for
