Our man in the Gulf: Crew are missing home
Updated 02 April 2003, 17.18
The Ark Royal
BBC reporter and ex-Newsround presenter Matthew Price is reporting from the aircraft carrier Ark Royal in the Gulf.

Our reporter, Matthew Price
And he's writing a web diary for CBBC Newsround.

In this installment, he tells us the crew are missing home.

Diary entry 21:

There are ladybirds all over the ship. And dragonflies. And other bugs.

No idea where they all came from. It's getting a bit itchy.

Today I spoke to the man in charge of engineering here. A man called Jonathan Woodcock.

Missing home

He's got an eleven-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old son at home. And he misses them a lot.

But he told me he gets e-mails from them often, so he feels he's keeping up to date with what they're doing. And he gets to talk to them a lot on the phone.

He's been in the navy all their lives, so he's often away from them.

But this time round it's easier to stay in touch because they have e-mail on board the ship - that's not happened so much before.

Some of the guys are getting a bit bored now I think. Wanting to get home as soon as possible.

Young officers

The young officers keep asking when they're going to be able to leave. They're still training and have to study as well as do their normal jobs on board.

We used to all share a cabin, but a few days ago they got to move out. One of them popped in the other day to say hello.

He said his dad reads this diary everyday, but doesn't believe I'm actually on board the ship typing away.

So to prove it, hello to Mr Knight, from your son Jonathan.

Oh, and while I'm on to you, tell him to clean up his cabin. It's a disgrace.
