Fears as deadly bug found in Australia
Updated 01 April 2003, 15.21
Lots of people in Hong Kong are wearing masks now
The deadly virus which is spreading across the world may have been found in Australia.

A British tourist who was visiting there was thought to have the bug, which seriously affects people's breathing.

But the man has now been treated and has gone back home.

Another 31 new cases have also been reported in Canada.

Easier to catch?

The virus, called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), has now killed 62 people worldwide and infected more than 1,700 people.

Bosses from the World Health Organisation (WHO) said the disease could be easier to catch than first thought.

It was hoped you could only catch it by being close to someone who was carrying the virus, but now they think it might be 'airborne' - which means it could be spread through the air.

Only four per cent die

Hong Kong has been worst hit - hundreds of people have been ordered to stay inside an apartment block where the virus is known to be spreading.

But it's important to remember that only four per cent of the people who get the virus die from it, which is quite low.

And there are only three possible cases of the disease in the UK. All three patients are being looked after in specialist hospitals, and they've all had close contact with someone who lives in the Far East recently.
