Our man in the Gulf: Matthew's joke
Updated 31 March 2003, 08.32
The Ark Royal
BBC reporter and ex-Newsround presenter Matthew Price is reporting from the aircraft carrier Ark Royal in the Gulf.

Matthew Price
Our reporter, Matthew Price
And he's writing a web diary for CBBC Newsround.

In his latest, he tells us about a 'scruffy journalist' competition.

Diary entry 19:

The ship got its own back today for having us journalists hanging around.

They held the "Scruffiest Journalist" competition. The "Messiest Media-type".

Earlier in the week the ship's chaplain had sent out an email to the ship's crew, asking for votes.

Tonight we found out who they'd chosen.

Laugh

Since we arrived we've been in navy uniform. When I'm on screen I'm allowed to wear a normal shirt. Otherwise they like us all in their uniform.

And they all laugh at how badly and scruffily we wear it.

So I decided to hit back. I asked the captain if I could wear his uniform. For special occasions.

Always game for a laugh, he said yes.

Applause

So I wandered downstairs in full captain's uniform, complete with my four stripes and captain's hat.

I got a nice round of applause. Then I realised why everyone was so happy.

There's a rule that you cannot wear hats in the officers' mess. If you do, you buy everyone a drink.

Even if I looked the part, I still don't know the navy rules.

And I didn't even win the competition. Or perhaps that's a good thing?!
