Updated 30 March 2003, 12.25
The Ark Royal
BBC reporter and ex-Newsround presenter Matthew Price is reporting from the aircraft carrier Ark Royal in the Gulf.

Matthew Price
Our reporter, Matthew Price
And he's writing a web diary for CBBC Newsround.

He tells us of the sadness felt by the crew about the death of their friends.

Diary entry 17:

It was our most beautiful day at sea so far. Bright spring sunshine. Blue skies and seas as far as you could see.

But it was also another sad weekend for Ark Royal.

On Saturday they flew home three of the crew members killed in the helicopter crash at the weekend.

Flags at half mast

The crew all went up onto the flight deck. Hundreds of them, lined up, backs straight, arms at their sides, in honour of the dead.

The ship's giant lift rose up to the flight deck. On it three coffins.

The ship's flag flew at the stern at half mast.

A firing party let off three volleys of shots. Then the bugler played the last post.

Friends carried the coffins

Friends of the dead men carried their coffins along the flight deck, to a waiting helicopter.

And then, after everyone else had left, the men and women who had worked most closely with the dead men, stood silent on deck, as the helicopter took off.

The men inside, taking off for the last time, on their way home to their grieving families.
