Bush: Coalition is 'breaking Saddam's grip'
Updated 27 March 2003, 19.32
Tony Blair and George Bush
George Bush and Tony Blair have made a speech on the future of Iraq.

Speaking in a press conference, President Bush said that both the US and the UK were committed to freeing the people of Iraq "whatever the cost".

Bush's main point was that thanks to the coalition, "the grip of terror around the throat of the Iraqi people is being loosened".

The two leaders made many other important statements in their speeches.

Tony Blair spoke against the Iraqi government and said that two British soldiers shown dead on Arabic TV had been "executed."

After the war

There was a lot of discussion of what would happen after the war, and both men said they would try to get the UN to help rebuild Iraq.

They said they wouldn't try to impose any system of government on the Iraqis, but would let them choose for themselves.

Other key developments:

  • Basra's communication with Baghdad is cut off by UK raids on transmitters.
  • The US is sending another 30,000 troops to join the campaign in Iraq .
  • More bombing in Baghdad as the assault continues.
