US troops head into north Iraq
Updated 27 March 2003, 07.19
A US aircraft prepares for take-off for a special operation in northern Iraq
American troops have landed in northern Iraq so they can approach the capital Baghdad from all angles.

Several hundred troops parachuted into an airfield near the city of Irbil.

The coalition forces can now head into Baghdad from several different directions.

Market raid

This comes as American officials admitted one of their bombing raids may have caused civilian deaths in a Baghdad market.

Angry crowds gathered at the market in Baghdad
It's thought 14 people were killed, and another 30 injured, in the attack.

American officials said US and UK forces used guided weapons to attack an Iraqi missile base, which is only 100 metres away from people's homes.

However, American defence bosses later said they had not fired any missiles or bombs anywhere near that district.

They even suggested the blast could have been caused by an Iraqi missile which missed its target and fell back to the ground.

Other main points

  • Coalition warplanes launched a heavy attack on a convoy of Iraqi tanks in the city of Basra
  • British Prime Minister Tony Blair is in talks with US President George W Bush in America. It's thought they're discussing how to re-build Iraq after the war
  • The US sent in another 30,000 troops to Iraq
