  Warplanes attack Iraqi tanks
Updated 26 March 2003, 19.48
US marines arrive in southern Iraq
Warplanes have launched a heavy attack on a convoy of Iraqi tanks in the city of Basra.

Coalition fighter jets started firing on the vehicles on Wednesday night.

Between 70 and 120 Iraqi tanks were spotted moving away from Basra by British radar systems.

Uprising

It's thought the Iraqi troops were either planning an attack to regain some of the captured ground, or they were heading out of the city because of another possible uprising.

People have continued shopping at markets despite the war
Markets have been open despite the war
There were reports of Iraqi civilians staging an uprising against Saddam Hussein on Tuesday night, but details are still unclear.

Missiles

Earlier, 14 people were killed and another 30 injured after a Baghdad market was hit during an air raid. Iraqi officials say it was attacked by US-led forces.

But coalition forces are trying to hurt as few civilians as possible so if this is confirmed this is a big blow to them.

So far, US military bosses have admitted they attacked an Iraqi missile base quite near the market, but they did not target any civilians.

There will be an investigation would be held into the incident.

Other main points

  • Military targets and Iraq's main TV station were bombed on Tuesday night.
  • Seven trucks full of food aid from Kuwait have arrived in the port of Umm Qasr, according to news agency Reuters.
  • British Prime Minister Tony Blair is flying to the US later on Wednesday to discuss how the war is going with President Bush
