Our man in the Gulf: A different language
Updated 26 March 2003, 07.24
The Ark Royal
BBC reporter and ex-Newsround presenter Matthew Price is reporting from the aircraft carrier Ark Royal in the Gulf.

Matthew Price
Our reporter, Matthew Price
And he's writing a web diary for CBBC Newsround.

He tells us how sailors have a language all their own

Diary entry 14:

Do you know Jack speak? I don't - and it's winding me up.

Jack speak, for you who don't know, is what sailors use to speak to each other.

So if I go to the bar, I'm meant to get a goffer (drink).

Scran

British Navy officers on the Ark Royak
Jack-speak: it makes sense to them!
Then it will be off to the wardroom (dining room) for scran (dinner). Always make sure you get duff (pudding) with plenty of custard.

You never go to bed on a ship. Only to your pit, or your scratcher if you prefer.

Don't get pit rejection. You'll never fall asleep.

Also you have to wear your steaming bats all the time in public (shoes). Especially when your walking down the passages (corridors) or into the galley (kitchen).

Taters

If it gets cold it's taters. Hot? Redders.

Bang your head on the ceiling, and you're hitting the deckhead. You'll get Hatch Rash if you bang your head when going down a hatch.

Loads of things are in initials.

Huh?

Once I went to see the MEO to talk about MBDDS but he wasn't in the SCC, he was in the AGR.

(MEO = marine engineering officer / MBDDS = machinery breakdown drills / SCC = ship's control centre / AGR = after gear room... no, I still haven't got a clue)

You see. Ships are confusing places. Especially if you're not a jack.

Right, must dash. I'm bursting. Got to go to the heads.
