Our man in the Gulf: War reporting is so hard
Updated 25 March 2003, 08.55
The Ark Royal
BBC reporter and ex-Newsround presenter Matthew Price is reporting from the aircraft carrier Ark Royal in the Gulf.

Matthew Price
Our reporter, Matthew Price
And he's writing a web diary for CBBC Newsround.

He explains how hard it is reporting from inside a war

Diary entry 13:

This afternoon we pulled alongside another ship, giant fenders in-between the ships to stop them hitting. It didn't work.

As we got closer and closer the bridge of the other ship crunched into the side of Ark Royal, messing up part of both ships.

Once they'd sorted that little mess out they started unloading the remaining ammunition and vehicles on board Ark Royal with giant cranes.

What stories are left?

It really feels as if the story has left Ark Royal. Its moment was when it put the marines ashore in southern Iraq.

Now it's just here in case it's needed. So it leaves us with a problem. What stories do we cover?

Swiss Red Cross pile up boxes of blankets which will go to Iraq
We've been trying to do some different ones for days now, but for some reason someone in the Ministry of Defence doesn't want us to.

There are all sorts of rules that cover where we can go, and what stories we can do. And the rules are standing in the way of us covering anything other than what's happening on Ark Royal.

Secrecy

Some of our friends on board are trying to sort it out, to get us to other ships so we can see the work being put in to get humanitarian aid into southern Iraq.

It's weird, some people don't seem to want us to cover that story... I'd have thought it would have been a good one to do. Let's hope they can sort it and we can get on with our jobs!
