RAF aircraft 'hit by US missile'
Updated 23 March 2003, 12.23
The RAF plane was hit by a US patriot missile
An RAF aircraft has been shot down by mistake by an American missile in Iraq.

It's not known how many crew were on board but a search for survivors has started.

It's thought the RAF Tornado plane was hit by a US anti-missile system which is in the Gulf to protect US and UK forces there. An investigation's been launched to find out exactly what happened.

This comes after two helicopter crashes have caused the deaths of 19 coalition troops, including 14 Britons. Both these are said to be accidents, not the result of enemy fire.

Fighting continues on the ground as troops head toward Baghdad
In another tragedy, an American soldier has been killed and 12 others injured after a grenade attack at a US military camp in Kuwait. The main suspect - a US soldier - has now been arrested.

There's been lots of fighting on the ground on Sunday. Iraqi officials claim to have captured 35 US prisoners of war, but American military bosses say none of their soldiers have been seized.

US troops have clashed with Iraqi forces as they head towards the capital, Baghdad.

Coalition forces are just 100 miles from Baghdad, having already captured the key cities of Basra and Nassiriya.

Other main news:

  • Baghdad was bombed again overnight on Saturday, and various military and government targets were hit.
  • Iraqi officials say 266 members of the public were injured during the fighting at Basra
  • A TV journalist and two crew members for ITN are missing after they came under fire in southern Iraq
