British troops die in helicopter crash in Iraq
Updated 21 March 2003, 07.08
A CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter has crashed
British forces have been killed in a helicopter crash as the war against Iraq continues.

Eight British and four American troops died after a US Sea Knight marine helicopter crashed in Kuwait, just miles from the Iraqi border.

These are the first confirmed deaths of UK and US troops since war broke out.

Ground attacks

It's thought that the crash was an accident, and not as a result of enemy fire.

Troops are heading into southern Iraq
A spokesman for British Prime Minister Tony Blair said: "Our thoughts will be with the families of those involved."

The tragedy comes as ground attacks started on Iraq.

British and American forces entered southern Iraq overnight on Thursday.

Regret

Air attacks on the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, also continued overnight.

Ground troops have also been taking control of key oilfields in Iraq.

Tony Blair made an important speech on Thursday night, saying the world would regret it if Saddam Hussein wasn't disarmed and removed from power.
