Updated 13 March 2003, 18.15
The Ark Royal
BBC reporter and ex-Newsround presenter Matthew Price will be reporting from the aircraft carrier Ark Royal in the Gulf.

Our reporter, Matthew Price
He'll be doing a web diary for CBBC Newsround.

Here, he talks about finally getting on board.

Diary entry two

We set sail after five, during dinner.

They seem to eat early on board. The food's OK, like I used to get at school. Lots of chips!

When we woke this morning we were in the middle of the Persian Gulf, heading for the Ark Royal and the British Navy.

For miles nothing.

Then, in the mist, the battleships started to appear.

In all we could see 15, dotted along the horizon. An eerie sight, just sitting here, waiting.

We lugged our gear - and there is a lot of it! - up to the flight deck.

We stood back as a helicopter landed on the ship. Then it was off across the two miles of sea to Ark Royal.

What it's like on board

It is a floating town.

Instead of streets they number the alleyways with letters and numbers.

I'm staying in a cabin with eleven others at 5P1. And on board there are hundreds of men and women.

All of them waiting - as the world is - to see if war will happen.

Check out Matthew's first impressions of life on board tomorrow!
