  Petition saves rare Amazon tribe
Updated 12 March 2003, 20.04
Tamata'i lives in the Amazon with his family
An Amazonian tribe that was under threat has been saved from destruction, thanks to a charity campaign.

Forty thousand people signed a petition organised by the charity Survival.

Living in the Amazon
The petition asked the Brazilian government to protect the land of the Awa tribe, so they could continue living there.

Now markers are being put in the forest to prevent people from harming the land.

Threats to the tribe

The tribe has only been known to people in the outside world for 30 years.

An Amazonian animal
Since then logging, roads and new settlers have threatened their survival by taking away their hunting ground.

The tribe lives off the land, gathering and hunting food without harming the environment.

Stop harming the forest

The tribe are hopeful they will be able to continue living in their part of the forest in peace.

Meanwhile the Brazilian government must make sure outsiders don't ignore the order.
