UK suggests new tests for Iraq
Updated 11 March 2003, 09.45
Soldiers in Iraq
The UK is suggesting new ideas to the United Nations to try and get countries to vote for a second resolution on Iraq.

The resolution would give the go-ahead for an attack on Iraq if Saddam Hussein does not show he is getting rid of his weapons of mass destruction by 17 March.

But now the UK government says it wants to set some tests for Iraq and maybe extend the Monday deadline a bit.

The tests would prove whether Iraq is doing what the UN weapons inspectors say.

And they would have to be done in a certain amount of time too.

Some of the tests could include:

  • Giving a deadline, possibly 10 days, for Iraq to make a decision to disarm.
  • Letting Iraqi scientists be interviewed in other countries
  • Destroying banned weapons
  • Giving inspectors paperwork to show what weapons they have destroyed in the past.
But the details are still being firmed up by UK politicians and could be presented to the Security Council on Tuesday.

It's expected that the UN Security Council will vote for or against the second resolution at the end of the week.

Politicians from the US and the UK are still trying to get as much support as possible from Security Council members for the second resolution.
