France and Russia to vote 'no' to Iraq war
Updated 10 March 2003, 21.17
French President Jacques Chirac in a TV interview
France and Russia have said they will block a UN resolution which would automatically lead to war with Iraq.

The two countries have made it very clear they don't want war.

They think Saddam Hussein should have more time to prove he's getting rid of his weapons.

But American and British leaders George W Bush and Tony Blair say he's had all the time he needs and want a second UN resolution.

There'll be a vote on the resolution near the end of the week. It would give Saddam a final deadline of 17 March to get rid of his weapons of mass destruction.

If that hasn't happened, an attack could be launched.

And the French President Jacques Chirac and Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov say they will vote against the resolution.

That's called their power of veto. As members of the UN Security Council they're allowed to do that.

The US could still lead an attack even if the UN votes against the resolution, but some countries think this would be very wrong.
