Bush calls for UN vote on war with Iraq
Updated 07 March 2003, 11.49
President Bush wants a UN vote on war with Iraq
US President George Bush has told the countries in the United Nations it is time to decide if they want to go to war with Iraq.

He said the UN Security Council must vote on a new resolution that could allow the use of force to disarm Iraq.

He added that Iraq wasn't really serious about getting rid of its nasty weapons, and that President Saddam Hussein is playing games.

Bush has said he's prepared to go to war with Iraq with or without the approval of the UN Security Council.

The Council is still deeply divided about how to tackle the situation in Iraq.

Tony Blair is one of the only world leaders who agrees with Bush, and he is trying to make sure that enough members of the Security Council support the vote.

New weapons report due

On Friday afternoon the Chief Weapons inspector Hans Blix will present a new report to the UN about his team's work in Iraq.

If it says Iraq is helping his team then it's unlikely the council will vote for a new resolution.

But if it is critical of the amount of cooperation Iraq is giving then the US may be able to win the vote that will give them permission to start fighting.
