Blair still trying for peaceful Iraq solution
Updated 23 February 2003, 14.47
Tony Blair in Downing Street
Iraq is running out of time if it wants to avoid military action, Prime Minister Tony Blair will tell other MPs this week.

In a speech to parliament Blair will say he doesn't want a war, but will add that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has had long enough to obey UN rules.

Four months ago the United Nations passed a resolution called 1441 that ordered Iraq to get rid of all its weapons of mass destruction.

Since that time UN weapons inspectors have been searching the country, and say Iraq needs to do more to prove it doesn't have those weapons.

Later this week the US are going to present to the UN their version of a new resolution that will give Iraq a choice - disarm quickly or face military action.

The US seems keener than any other country about going to war, but they have struggled to convince others it is necessary.

The weapons inspectors report to the UN in mid-March, and after that the US are expected to force a vote on their new resolution.

If they win the vote and their resolution is adopted by the UN then military action against Iraq looks almost impossible to avoid.
