UN orders Iraq to destroy missiles
Updated 22 February 2003, 10.55
Iraq has to get rid of a number of its missiles
Iraq has been ordered to destroy some of its missiles by the UN weapons inspectors.

After the Gulf War in 1991, rules were put into place by the United Nations that banned Iraq from having missiles that could fly further than 150km.

The al-Samoud missile goes further than that, so chief weapons inspector Hans Blix has said they must all be destroyed by 1 March.

What Iraq does next is extremely important, because if they refuse it could be the excuse the US and the UK need to justify starting military action.

They already think Iraq has disobeyed a UN rule called resolution 1441 which orders the country to get rid of all its weapons.

However, convincing other countries like France and Germany that starting a war against Iraq is a good idea has been difficult.

They want to give weapons inspectors more time to search the country, in the hope that a peaceful solution to the problem can be found.

And even if France and Germany do finally agree that fighting has to start, they will ask the UN to make a new resolution before any military action begins.
