Soldiers are 'ready' to go to war says US
Updated 21 February 2003, 08.37
Soldiers get ready for war in Iraq
Troops from Britain and the US are ready to go to war with Iraq as soon as they are needed.

That's according to the US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who has said there are now enough soldiers in the area to begin fighting.

The US are hoping that a key part of their military plans will fall into place on Friday, with Turkey set to announce whether they will let America use their bases.

Turkey shares a border with the north of Iraq, and if soldiers are allowed to be based there it will make it easier for them to take control of northern Iraq.

But Turkey want some money in return, and are trying to persuade the US to up their current offer.

Fresh UN appeal

In a further development, the US government has said they are working on a new UN resolution that will give them permission to start military action.

However once they've written it they will have to convince countries like France, Germany and Russia a war is necessary, and at the moment they don't think it is.
