Nepalese children orphaned by civil war
Updated 11 February 2003, 17.30
Orphans in Nepal
Children in Nepal have been hit really hard by a seven-year long civil war in their country, according to child rights workers.

Thousands of children have been orphaned, many of them have witnessed terrible violence and fighting.

The civil war is between the government of Nepal and a group of rebels called the Maoists.

Peace

At the moment the fighting has stopped because a ceasefire was agreed a month ago, but more than 7,000 people died during the civil war.

Some children are luckier than others and live in orphanages where they are safe and cared for.

They have food and shelter and some of them even get to go to school.

Not so lucky

Other children who still live in their villages are not so lucky. Many of them are without homes and some have been forced to become labourers or beggars just to be able to live.

The government and the Maoist rebels are now holding talks to try and agree on how to make Nepal a peaceful country.

Child rights workers want them to promise that children will be protected no matter what happens in their peace talks.
