Potter auction set to help African street kids
Updated 07 February 2003, 14.41
JK Rowling signs a book for a fan
Street children in Ghana are set to get help thanks to a charity auction of Harry Potter first editions.

A writer called Simon Singh is donating his own first edition copies of the Philosopher's Stone and the Chamber of Secrets.

But JK Rowling herself has also handed over a signed first edition Goblet of Fire to add to the collection to be auctioned for charity on 12 February.

The Potter author's even sending signed stickers to go with the other two books, which could double their value!

The money made will go to ActionAid and Children in Need.

ActionAid reckons they could make about 11,000 from the auction.

That would help 22 Ghanaian street children learn new skills to help them get off the street.

Thrilled

Fact File
Potter books NOT as valuable if...
It's a 1st edition bound in cloth with gold writing on the front
It's paperback
It's a book-club edition
It's Book 3 or 4
It's in a bad condition

The auction's book expert is over the moon to have the magical donations: "To be entrusted with one Harry Potter first edition to sell is unusual enough.

"But to have three in the same sale and to be offering them for charity is a coup!".

The Philosopher's Stone alone is expected to make about 8,000 to 10,000 in the auction. But the signed sticker added to that could make an extra 5,000!

First edition Harry Potters are like gold dust, especially ones of Philosopher's Stone.

Ones in good condition, like those in this auction, are very rare and can be really valuable.
