US evidence doesn't convince the UN
Updated 06 February 2003, 11.17
Colin Powell speaks to the UN
The evidence that US Secretary of State Colin Powell gave to the United Nations isn't enough to start a war, according to other UN nations.

Three members of the important UN Security Council, Russia, France and China, think weapons inspectors in Iraq should be given more time to do their jobs.

Satellite photographs show evidence against Iraq says Powell
Satellite photographs are evidence says the US
What those countries think is very important, because even if only one of them doesn't think military action should start, the UN cannot back it.

The US hoped their evidence would be enough to convince the UN that Iraq was deliberately hiding things from weapons inspectors.

That would break an important UN rule called resolution 1441, and would give the US an excuse to begin military action against the country.

If the UN doesn't agree that Iraq has broken resolution 1441 then the US will have to decide if they are prepared to go to war without United Nations support.
