Afghan environment 'ruined' by years of war
Updated 30 January 2003, 13.17
Snow leopards are in danger
Wildlife is dying in Afghanistan and forests are disappearing because of years of war.

Environment experts from the United Nations say fighting and drought has ravaged the land.

They say people are living and working in poor conditions.

They found children working 12-hour shifts in dangerous factories, and sleeping at their machines.

Some kids in a shoe factory had no protection from poisonous fumes.

Water shortage

Afghan children are working in dangerous conditions
More than half the forests in three Afghan provinces have been destroyed in 25 years.

Two million refugees have come back home after years of fighting and there aren't enough resources.

Water for drinking and crops, and trees for fuel are in short supply.

More people hunting for meat and fur means wild boar, deer, snow leopards and bears are all at risk.
