  • Population: 44 million
  • Capital city: Pretoria
  • Languages spoken: 11 official languages including English, Afrikaans, Sesotho, Setswana, Xhosa and Zulu
  • Major religion: Christianity, Islam, indigenous beliefs
  • Fascinating Fact: From 1948 - 1994 the South African government enforced Apartheid. This meant that white and black people were forced to live separately, go to different schools and black people could not vote. White people got all the privileges and ruled the country. But this all came to an end when black people finally got the right to vote and elected Nelson Mandela as president. He had spent 27 years in prison for fighting for black people's rights.
