France and Germany try to stop war
Updated 11 February 2003, 08.49
Gerhard Schroeder (left) and Jacques Chirac
The leaders of France and Germany have promised to work together to try to stop war against Iraq.

Fact File
What is being sent to the Gulf?
Up to 31,000 UK troops including:
26,000 ground troops
5,000 service troops
The Desert Rats
6,000 front-line combat troops
120 Challenger 2 battle tanks
150 Warrior armoured personnel carriers
100,000 US troops including:
12,000 4th Infantry division troops
2,000 Marines trained for chemical and biological warfare

Britain and America think the Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein, has got secret weapons of war hidden in Iraq, which he could use against them if he's not stopped.

And they are sending troops to the Gulf as the possibility of war with Iraq looms.

But President Jacques Chirac and Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder say we need more time to find out if Iraq really has the banned weapons.

And everything ought to be done to avoid war.
