  Families flee Australian bushfires
Updated 20 January 2003, 14.40
A family prepares to leave their home as the fires get closer
Families are still fleeing the Australian city of Canberra as bushfires continue to rage.

People started packing their bags in the north of the city on Monday as fire crews warned the blazes could spread there because of strong winds.

Four people have died and nearly 400 homes have been destroyed so far in the fires, which were started by lightning.

Worst fires in Canberra's history

But authorities in Canberra, the capital of Australia, have been attacked by some residents who think they weren't given enough warning that the fires were coming their way.

Map
The fires raged just south of the city for a whole week before they blew into Canberra. Some people think more should've been done to stop them spreading.

But fire crews have been battling all weekend to stop the blazes.

They're the worst fires in Canberra's history.
