  • Firefighters called off new strikes for further talks over pay.

  • Popstars - The Rivals caused a storm when favourite Javine failed to make it into the girl group. Girls Aloud were expected to beat boy band One True Voice to the Christmas top spot.

  • The Government announced its plans for the future of fox hunting. It said some fox hunting should be allowed to continue in England and Wales - which upset anti-hunt campaigners.

  • Oasis singer Liam Gallagher lost two front teeth in a fight in a Munich bar.

  • People in the southern hemisphere saw a total eclipse of the sun.

    The Two Towers opened

  • Second Lord Of The Rings film The Two Towers broke box office records.

  • One boy was killed and others were seriously injured when a bus carrying children home from school toppled over near Cowbridge in Wales.

  • Bushfires raged out of control near the Australian city of Sydney.

    Spanish oil spill

  • The tanker which sank off the Spanish coast was still leaking oil. Experts said it should turn solid in the cold - stopping it all from leaking.

  • Fire destroyed buildings in the historic centre of Edinburgh.

  • Paula Radcliffe won the BBC Sports personality Of The Year Award after a great year including a Marathon record.
